Seminar Disability Management Reasonable Accomodations and Assistive Technologies
By : Galuh Ristyanto

Thursday, March 25, 2010, I had the opportunity to participate and attend the International Seminar on campus I, STMIK Amikom Yogyakarta. This is the first time I attended an international seminar. At an international seminar was to discuss about the Disability Management Reasonable Accomodations and Assistive Technologies with speakers Dr. Marrion Steff, PhD from McGill University, Canada.

In this seminar, the speaker also works closely with the Center for Disability Studies and Services (PSLD: Center for the Study and disability services) to invite three students of UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta, the two of them are students who experience vision abnormalities. They're sharing about things about technology that has helped them reduce their shortcomings during live lectures activity.

The event is also demonstrated on braille technological innovation that has helped students who experience vision abnormalities. Starting from the laptop braille, a tool for writing braille, and also introduces the various technologies that can help their learning activities even if only through pictures in a slide presentation. In addition, one student who experienced vision disorder also demonstrated a software which helps translate the words contained in the Windows operating system through a visual (voice), on each user go to the Windows menus. Even when typing in Word, also translated visually (sound) of each letter typed. Even this software can also help to read ebook. Proverbial like didongengkan story. JAWS for Windows, this is the software that has helped their learning activities will be computerized technology. Although I do not understand very well every point in the discussion of this international seminar, but it was counted as I learned to test the sensitivity to listen to and digest the conversation in English. Unlike when I get a phone call from Sun Microsystems 7x. What made the Sun Microsystems in English on the phone is different when I listen to direct the conversation in English in this international seminar. In my opinion, I am more able to digest the conversation in English when I received a call from Sun Microsystems. The point I am more focused listening and digesting in every conversation when I received a call from Sun Microsystems.

Maybe I focus on listening and digesting because I do not deal directly (face to face) with the speaker. It makes me more focused with what was said not to the person who was talking to me.

Date March 18, 2010 was also held an international seminar with speaker Mark Woodward, PhD from Arizona State University, USA, with discussion topics Politic and Religion in America. Because he received a state job, so that eventually an international seminar with speaker Mark Woodward adjourned. According to the newspaper, was postponed until April 15, 2010. Insha Allah, I will participate again and I will also share in the blog ini.Pihak campus plans to hold an international seminar with speakers from abroad every month. It is expected that as the container will concern the college students who want explored the ability to speak English through an international seminar with the opinion expressed by speakers from the relevant overseas in an international seminar.
